Quick Overview

Gabbeh or Gabba carpets are a variety of Persian carpet and are the world's best-known coarsely woven Iranian tribal rugs.

This type of rug is popular among the populations of the Zagros Mountains. A Gabbeh is a hand-woven pile rug of coarse quality, usually crafted by women and woven on horizontal looms and in a relatively low knot density, which can be assembled quickly and easily. Much thicker and coarser than other Persian carpets, sometimes they can be as much as one inch or 2.5 cm in depth.

They are characterized by an abstract design that relies upon open fields of color and a playfulness with geometry. It is this subjective and random process that renders a genuine Gabbeh a completely unique work of art, distinct from other Persian rugs and from many other types of weaving or knotting in general with designs that typically are symbolic in shape and style.

The irregularities in the dyestuff and wool result not in a pure color, but rather a collage of similar hues with an appearance of differently colored zones, which gives Gabbeh their rich texture and emphasizes their unmistakable nomadic origin and spirit. Gabbeh are constructed from local handspun wool yarn and all the colors are created with vegetal dyes which are extracted from native plants and roots found in the Zagros Mountains range.

In Farsi (the language of Persia), the word Gabbeh means something raw or natural, uncut or "in the rough". This is a rough and primitive carpet.
